Telegram’s Crypto Wallet Announcement

According to Мінфін — Крипто/Фінанси: Pavel Durov has revealed plans to roll out a self-custodial cryptocurrency wallet within Telegram by the end of summer, enabling over 1 billion users to send digital assets without any transaction fees. This new wallet will support Gram, the digital currency previously known as Toncoin. Telegram users will benefit from instant, cost-free crypto transfers, streamlining the process of moving digital funds.

Current Status

Telegram already hosts an official bot, @wallet, which has attracted more than 150 million users, highlighting strong demand for crypto functionality within the messaging platform. Since introducing the Gram blockchain project in 2018, Telegram has raised $1.7 billion, underscoring the initiative’s success. However, in 2020, the company returned $1.2 billion to investors and paid an $18.5 million fine due to legal challenges.

Following the wallet launch announcement, Gram’s token price increased by 7%, reaching $1.52, with a market capitalization of $4.18 billion. Durov re-engaged with the Gram ecosystem in 2026, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to cryptocurrency technology. He described the upcoming self-custodial wallet as

“the largest launch of a non-custodial crypto wallet in human history.”

The introduction of a self-custodial wallet in Telegram could significantly impact the crypto market, given the platform’s massive user base, potentially driving mass adoption of digital assets. Free transfers and instant transactions may attract new users and boost demand for Gram tokens.

This development could also unlock new opportunities for financial technology in regions where access to traditional banking services is limited.
