India Moves Toward Polymer Banknotes

According to Мінфін — Крипто/Фінанси: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has begun preparations for a pilot test of plastic banknotes, with a potential full-scale launch as early as 2027. This initiative aims to explore the feasibility of shifting to polymer-based currency. The initial phase will focus on 10 and 20 rupee notes, which are expected to be the first denominations converted to the new material.

To advance the project, the RBI has announced an international tender for the supply of polymer substrate needed for note production. The central bank intends to procure approximately 68,000 packs of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) sheets. This material has already proven successful in other nations, starting with Australia's introduction of polymer notes in 1988. Today, over 50 countries—including Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Romania, and Mexico—have adopted similar banknotes.

Advantages of Polymer Currency

The regulator is evaluating a complete transition to polymer notes, which offer several benefits, notably enhanced resistance to counterfeiting. Security features of polymer banknotes include:

  • a transparent window with a portrait
  • metallic elements
  • a magnetic security thread
  • latent images
  • rainbow security patterns

These features make them more reliable than traditional paper currency.

By taking this step, the Reserve Bank of India is advancing innovation within the country's financial system, which could significantly alter how money is perceived and used in everyday transactions.

The shift to plastic banknotes could have a major impact on India's financial infrastructure, including reduced costs for printing and processing cash, along with stronger anti-counterfeiting measures. This move may also encourage other nations in the region to consider similar transitions, potentially reshaping global currency trends. Given the successful adoption in other countries, India is well-positioned to become a regional leader in currency innovation.
