Zelensky and Trump to Discuss Territorial Concessions: What is Known About the Plan.
According to ТСН: In Ukraine, preparations continue for the meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump.
The leaders of the countries intend to discuss the 'sensitive' aspects of the peace process, including possible territorial concessions from Ukraine.
Experts note that Russia remains steadfast in its maximalist demands regarding five Ukrainian regions and Crimea.
Moreover, the so-called 'Trump peace plan' proposed freezing the conflict and effectively ceding control of key areas in Donbas, particularly in the cities of Kramatorsk and Slavyansk, to Russia.
What Demands the Kremlin Has for Ukraine
In September, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that for a sustainable peace, Ukraine needs to legally consolidate new territorial realities following the annexation of Crimea, as well as the incorporation of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.
Lavrov also emphasized the need for a neutral, non-aligned, and non-nuclear status for Ukraine. He believes that peace is only possible with the removal of security threats to Russia associated with NATO expansion.
The Kremlin leadership shows no willingness to make concessions, stressing the constancy of their goals.
Trump's Plan for Territorial Concessions
Recently, Western media published a US peace plan that involves Ukraine recognizing Russian control over Crimea and the territories of Donetsk and Luhansk. For the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, it was proposed to 'freeze' the conflict along the current line of contact.
Kyiv was to agree to significant concessions, including ceding 5,000 square kilometers of territory that it currently controls, including the cities of Kramatorsk and Slavyansk.
In exchange, Russia promised to return only part of the captured territories.
almost 2,000 square kilometers in the Kharkiv region;
450 square kilometers in the Dnipropetrovsk region;
300 square kilometers in the Sumy region;
20 square kilometers in the Chernihiv region.
Trump also emphasized that his proposal is not final and may be subject to change, while President Zelensky confirmed that 'Trump's team is listening to us.' He noted that the situation is constantly changing.
The US President warned that Ukraine could face unfavorable concessions and that Russia might soon capture additional territories.
'Look at how everything is going: if you look, everything is moving in one direction,' Trump noted.
He clarified that the process of agreeing on a peace treaty is not simple, but both sides are starting to recognize the benefits of compromise.
Position of Ukraine and Europe
At the Crimean Platform summit, President Zelensky stressed the importance of preserving international order, calling for the avoidance of forceful changes to borders in Europe.
Deputy Head of the President's Office Iryna Mudra stated that Ukraine's territorial integrity is not up for negotiation.
Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk outlined 'red lines' for any negotiations, stressing that Ukraine does not recognize Russian occupation.
European leaders have also stated that 'the territorial integrity of Ukraine must be respected.' For example, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that Ukraine should not be forced into territorial concessions.
'We must be clear: there can be no unilateral redrawing of borders of a sovereign European state,' emphasized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The President of the Czech Republic stressed that territorial losses cause great pain to Ukrainians, but battlefield realities may prompt concessions.
Territorial Concessions at the Zelensky-Trump Meeting
At the meeting on November 23 in Geneva, representatives from the US, Ukraine, and Europe developed an updated peace agreement that reaffirms Ukraine’s sovereignty.
The new agreement was shortened from 28 to 19 points, considering amendments and removals.
Specifically, President Zelensky hopes to meet with Trump to discuss territorial concessions.
Despite the public optimism of the Trump administration, differences in positions could become a serious obstacle to the peace process.
How Many Ukrainian Territories Russia Has Captured
According to recent data, Russia has captured approximately 908 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory since August. This area is comparable to the city of Berlin.
The situation is complicated by weather conditions; however, experts believe that it will take Russia a long time to fully capture Donbas.
Journalist Roman Shrayk noted that in a year, Russia has seized about 2,900 square kilometers of Donetsk, but a large part of the region remains under Ukrainian control.
Zelensky emphasized that Russian propaganda spreads false information about Ukraine's ability to defend itself, making the daily combat success of the Ukrainian army evidence to the contrary.
'Pressure for peace should not be on Ukraine, but on Russia—the only reason why the war is dragging on,' he concluded.This news focuses on important aspects of the peace process in Ukraine, highlighting the positions of both Ukrainian and Russian leadership, as well as the reactions of the international community. The context in which these negotiations are taking place demonstrates the complexity of the situation and the tension in relations between countries that directly affect stability not only in the region but also in the world.
