A small village in the Cotswolds has made it to the top 20 best in Britain: what is known about it.
According to The Sun: A small, little-known village in the Cotswolds, Upper Slaughter, has recently been recognized as one of the best places in the UK. Although it is located near the famous Bourton-on-the-Water, Upper Slaughter often remains unnoticed by visitors.
Upper Slaughter, home to fewer than 200 local residents and only one hotel dating back to the 1600s, received this recognition as a result of a survey conducted by Which?, which researched the best towns and villages in the UK. Additionally, a neighboring village named Lower Slaughter also made it to the list.
Having only made it to the top twenty, they received a full five stars for attractiveness. Although they have a low rating in shopping and attractions categories - as they have none of these - they still can be a great option for a day trip.
Upper Slaughter is like stepping back in time, as there has been no new building in the village for almost 120 years. The village is a Thankful Village in the UK, meaning it did not lose any men during the First World War and the Second World War, earning the title of Double Thankful Village.
The village is located on a popular hiking route, the Wardens Way, and is known for St. Peter's Church, which dates back to the 12th century and contains a war memorial in the form of a stained glass window. Moreover, Upper Slaughter Manor, mentioned for the first time in the Domesday Book in 1086, fell into ruin until it was restored in the 19th century and is now a private residence.
