Key phases of modernization
The improvements include creating a single expanded terminal and a new transport hub, which will be able to serve up to three million passengers per year. In 2024, the airport welcomed one million.
The first phase includes three extensions, one of which is for the baggage claim area on the southern side of departures.
A small extension is also planned in the departure area and at the arrival building front.
The second phase will include connecting the departure and arrival buildings to create one large terminal.
Additionally, improvements in baggage handling, security, and passenger amenities are planned.
The reorganized transport hub will provide easier access for buses, taxis, cyclists, and pedestrians.
The airport will allocate £511,000 for a new bus service to improve connections with the local area.
There are also plans to invest £60,000 in a program for staff to promote sustainable and active ways of commuting to and from work.

The airport will also introduce electric bikes and scooters for passenger convenience.
Steve Hill, director of Bournemouth Airport, noted that the approved updates “allow us to invest in the necessary facilities, services, and infrastructure to support sustainable growth while providing a first-class experience for passengers.”
Bournemouth is not the only regional airport undergoing upgrades — Bristol Airport has also recently announced its modernization plans.
These proposals indicate intentions to radically change the travel process to and from the region in the coming years, including increasing the number of flights from 85,990 to 100,000 per year, which will mean an additional 35 flights daily during peak season.
