Love Locks Overwhelm: Popular Beach in Lanzarote Needs Saving.
The Love Locks Trend Has Sparked Discontent
According to The Sun: Among the various ways to celebrate the holiday – buying postcards, taking photos against famous landmarks – a trend has emerged that has outraged locals and tourists alike.
AlamyIt concerns the so-called 'love locks', which previously symbolized the love of couples. Special locks were made with engraved initials and attached in prominent places, with the keys thrown away.
However, fewer tourists are now willing to order custom locks, as plastic versions can be bought in souvenir shops on the beach for just a few euros.
Locals Complain About Pollution
David Gainford, known as Mr. TravelON, who has lived in Lanzarote for 20 years, calls this trend 'vandalism' and 'the peak of plastic pollution'.

In particular, Playa Flamingo beach is suffering from this trend, where David has urged tourists to stop attaching locks to the beach.
“You can buy bright red and pink plastic locks for about £4.50 in what I call 'junk' shops along the promenade,” he noted.
Instead of spending time engraving initials, visitors simply write their names with a marker and attach the lock anywhere.
Environmental Consequences
As a result, chains on the beach have filled up with locks, and the structures have begun to fall.
“Even if the structures fall, it hasn’t stopped people – now they just attach locks in other places,” David added.
He points out that Lanzarote is known for its cleanliness and appeal, but the locks are beginning to look like an unattractive element. This spoils the look and aesthetics of the island, which is famous for its clean promenades.

In light of this, David suggests that local authorities consider creating a special structure for love locks, similar to the one in Bionly.
Despite all these problems, Playa Flamingo beach remains one of the best in Lanzarote, with soft golden sand and calm water suitable for swimming and snorkeling.

Celebrating love with love locks, which was once a romantic gesture, now sparks controversy due to environmental consequences. Locals and tourists are concerned about the pollution that is increasing as a result of this trend. Currently, a solution to this situation has not yet been found, but discussions continue, and perhaps a compromise will soon be reached that will allow for the beaches' cleanliness while maintaining the romantic tradition.
