Skopje: a city reminiscent of Las Vegas

According to The Sun: There is a city just a few hours away from the UK that is compared to Las Vegas, although it is hundreds of miles away. This city is Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia.

Skopje is an underrated city, impressing visitors with large statues and modern buildings with columns. According to Time Out, it has made the list of the 33 most underrated travel destinations in the world.

“It feels like you are visiting an amusement park for adults.”
- is mentioned in an article about the similarity of Skopje to Las Vegas.

The city features many statues, including the 22-meter tall statue of the “Warrior on Horseback” in Macedonia Square. This statue is surrounded by a fountain that starts to glow at sunset and in the evenings.

Its appearance is reminiscent of what one can find at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Another similarity is the architecture of the buildings rebuilt after the earthquake of 1963. Many old constructions have been replaced by new luxurious ones that incorporate elements of Doric architecture, also characteristic of Las Vegas.

But Skopje is not only similar to the American city. It has its own version of the Arc de Triomphe from Paris, known as Porta Macedonia. This building was erected for the 20th anniversary of North Macedonia's independence.

However, it is smaller than the Parisian arch: Its height is 21 meters, while the architectural landmark in Paris is 49 meters tall.

Access and entertainment

Skopje has also proven to be the second most beautiful city in Europe, where lunch in a restaurant costs less than six pounds, and a half-liter of beer costs less than two.

Among the entertainment options, one should visit the Old Bazaar - a historical market, one of the oldest and largest in the Balkans, which has been significant for trade since the 12th century.

On the outskirts lies the Matka Gorge - one of the most popular spots for nature recreation in North Macedonia. Here is the artificial Matka Lake, created in 1938, known for boating, kayaking, and hiking along the shores.

The Brits can quickly reach Skopje from London, where flight tickets start at 26 pounds.

Overall, Skopje is a city worth visiting, not only for its accessibility but also for its rich cultural heritage and opportunities for active recreation.
