Welcome to The Logoff: The Trump administration announced a deal that will allow TikTok to avoid a ban in the US.
Event Context
TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, was scheduled to be banned in the US starting January 2025, as the deadline for selling the app set by Congress in 2024 expired without results.
However, President Donald Trump signed several executive orders postponing the ban. The latest of these orders, issued in June, set a new deadline – September 17, which is this Wednesday.
What Does the Deal Entail?
Details of the agreement are still unknown, but a resolution will require selling TikTok to an American owner. As is often the case in the Trump administration, the announced agreement is currently only "framework," according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Chinese officials stated on Monday that the two sides had reached a "basic consensus" regarding the deal.
Why Did the US Want to Ban TikTok?
Concerns about TikTok stem from fears of China's influence. The close ties between ByteDance and the Chinese government, combined with the app's content algorithm and a large user base—TikTok has around 170 million American users—mean that China could access vast amounts of personal data or use TikTok to spread propaganda.
Why Is This Important?
TikTok's massive user base in the US makes a potential ban a politically sensitive topic, especially among younger voters who are becoming increasingly important to both parties.
What’s Next?
There is a possibility that Trump will further postpone the ban deadline while the terms of the deal—if it becomes valid—are finalized. So far, Trump has stated that he plans to talk to Chinese President Xi Jinping about the deal on Friday.
And with this, it’s time to step out…
This year marks the World Athletics Championships 2025, which began last weekend in Tokyo, Japan. We have nine thrilling days of athletics ahead of us. However, despite all this, my attention was drawn to the extraordinary races that took place in the morning (Eastern Time – Tokyo is 16 hours ahead).
In the 3000-meter steeplechase, New Zealand runner Geordie Bimi shocked everyone by defeating two-time world champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist Soufiane El Bakkali. It’s a finish worth seeing to believe it. Have a great evening!
