Dutch-Tinted Architecture in Topsham

Devon expert Alex Gwilym from Sweetcombe Cottage Holidays noted:

“Topsham is home to some of the most unique buildings in Devon.'
He adds:
“The ‘Dutch Houses’ on The Strand are aptly named thanks to their curved gable ends and tall narrow stature, architectural features more commonly found in Holland than in the UK.”

At first glance, Topsham may not resemble Amsterdam, but upon closer inspection, one can see obvious influences throughout the town. In the 17th-18th centuries, it was actively engaged in wool trading, exporting it to the Netherlands. The town's architecture featured imported Dutch bricks that were brought over on ships returning from trade.

These bricks were used for building on The Strand, where mercantile houses displayed typical Dutch gables — rounded at the top.

One of the mercantile houses, built in 1688, has now been transformed into a museum. It is referred to as “one of the most beautiful properties with Dutch influence” in Topsham.

Topsham is also home to the Topsham Lock, which allows for wild swimming. The town is renowned for its antiques; the largest antique center is located on the waterfront, housing a vast collection of collectible and vintage items over more than 9000 square feet across three floors.

Another interesting location is Goat Walk — a picturesque promenade, part of the Exe Estuary Trail, where one can enjoy stunning views and watch birds. Just 15 minutes away is the city of Exeter, and for those looking to visit the beaches, a trip south to Sandy Bay and Budleigh Salterton is recommended.

Experiences from Topsham

Writer Cayen Fielding, who resides in Devon, shares her impressions:

“TOPSHAM is rather like stepping into a village straight out of Harry Potter, with subtle Dutch influences.”
History permeates every corner of this charming town. She also recommends visiting Quay Antiques — a massive warehouse with 65 antique dealers spread over three floors.

In Topsham, you can also find the modern home goods store CASA, which inspires a complete revamp of home interiors. Don’t forget to try Devon cream tea in one of the town’s cozy cafes.
