Consumer Rights When Returning Goods: What You Can and Cannot Do.
According to The Sun: Retailers have made returning goods significantly more complicated, making the return process more costly if you decide to change your mind while shopping on your phone or tablet.
What are your rights as a consumer when buying and returning goods? Here’s a brief overview:
FAULTY GOODS
If you have purchased a substandard item, sellers are obligated to refund you the full amount. This applies even if you have already used the clothing.
However, the item must be returned within 30 days to receive all your money back. Within six months of purchase, you have the right to exchange or repair.
Keep receipts as proof of purchase, but if the item turns out to be faulty, you may also use a bank statement as proof if the receipt is lost.
CHANGING YOUR MIND
Stores are not required to refund you if you simply changed your mind about a purchase in-store, such as buying the wrong size or style.
However, if the store has a return policy, it is obliged to adhere to it.
When you shop online, you have the right to change your mind. Typically, you are given 14 days to inform the seller of your intention to return the item and another 14 days to send it back.
Many stores offer 28 days or more for returns and refunds. However, always check the return policy before purchasing, especially for items bought on sale.
COSTS
Some stores have implemented fees for customers returning online orders.
You will have to cover the return shipping costs for goods purchased online unless the seller offers free returns.
Sometimes, you pay for the return if stated in the store's terms – but not in cases where the item does not meet standards or is faulty.
This can become problematic when shopping online, so read the return policy carefully. If unsure about the item, try to check it in-store if possible.
