Trump proposes to reduce NASA funding

U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed to cut funding for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 2026. This will lead to the termination of support for major projects such as the delivery of soil from Mars and the creation of the new Nancy Grace Roman space telescope. Overall funding will be reduced by 20%. The scientific directorate, which deals with research in astrophysics, planetary science, heliophysics, and Earth studies, will suffer the most, with funding for these areas being cut by 50%, 30%, and 67%, respectively.

The budget proposal will maintain funding for the Hubble and James Webb telescopes, but the new Nancy Grace Roman telescope will not receive support, even though it is already built and undergoing testing. The costs for it were supposed to amount to $4.3 billion. Funds and their distribution may change. The budget proposal was presented after the statement of Trump’s NASA administrator candidate, Jared Isaacman, that the agency must be able to engage in manned landing programs on the Moon and Mars and initiate a new golden age of science and discovery.
