Trump Announces Billions in Gaza Reconstruction Aid, Forging Stronger U.S.-U.N. Ties.
Peace Council Meeting and Financial Aid for Gaza
According to Novyny.live: On February 19, 2023, U.S. President Donald Trump convened a Peace Council meeting, where he announced a $10 billion allocation for Gaza's reconstruction. During the session, Trump also declared a new cooperative effort between the Peace Council and the United Nations, stressing the need to strengthen the U.N. to more effectively address global challenges. This announcement comes amid ongoing humanitarian needs in the region following recent conflicts.
It is noteworthy that the United States currently owes nearly $4 billion in unpaid U.N. membership dues. Trump argued this sum is negligible compared to the cost of war, urging for increased financial support.
"This amount is very small if you compare it to the cost of war," the President stated. He further emphasized the necessity of reinforcing the U.N.:
"The U.N. should be strengthened so the organization can better solve world problems."
International Support and Humanitarian Assistance
Other nations that have already pledged aid for Gaza include:
- Kazakhstan
- Azerbaijan
- United Arab Emirates
- Morocco
- Bahrain
- Qatar
- Saudi Arabia
- Uzbekistan
- Kuwait
These countries have collectively contributed over $7 billion. Separately, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is seeking to raise an additional $2 billion for Gaza relief efforts.
Trump assured that the U.S. is prepared to offer financial assistance if required:
"We will strengthen the U.N. We will take care of their conditions; if help is needed, financial help, we will help financially."
As part of efforts to stabilize Gaza, several countries are planning to contribute military and police personnel. These nations are Indonesia, Morocco, Albania, Kosovo, and Kazakhstan. This international support aims to facilitate the region's recovery and improve the humanitarian situation.
The allocation of substantial funds for Gaza's reconstruction and the push for enhanced cooperation with the U.N. signal a shift in the Trump administration's approach to managing humanitarian crises. The situation in Gaza remains dire, and international efforts, including security support, could significantly impact regional stability. Collaboration with other nations and international bodies is seen as crucial for achieving lasting peace and recovery in this conflict-affected area.
