Trump Before Meeting with Zelensky: Optimistic About Peace Agreement.
According to ТСН: US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about the possibility of reaching a peace agreement before his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In a telephone interview with The New York Post, he noted:
"I think we have a decent chance of that."
Trump emphasized that he has already managed to "settle eight wars", but the war between Russia and Ukraine is the "most challenging". He highlighted:
"But I think we can handle it."
Furthermore, the US president believes that Ukraine and Russia are ready to end the conflict, stating that:
"I think they [i.e., Ukraine] want to do it now, and I think Russia wants to do it. But every time one wants to do it, the other doesn’t."
New Peace Proposal
Currently, a new peace proposal consisting of 20 points has emerged in the negotiations – an alternative to the 28-point plan developed by Trump’s negotiators Steve Biegun and Jared Kushner. One of the main differences is the issue of territories, particularly the status of the non-occupied part of Donbas. Ukraine's proposal to create a demilitarized "free economic zone" has yet to receive a response from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who insisted on Ukraine relinquishing its fortified northern Donetsk region.
Position on Zelensky's Plan
In a follow-up interview with Politico, Trump noted that he is not currently supporting Zelensky's plan:
"He has nothing until I approve it. So we’ll see what he has."
Negotiations among the US, Ukraine, and Russia will continue, and further developments could significantly affect the course of the military conflict. It is important to monitor the reactions of all parties to new initiatives, as this could be a crucial step towards achieving peace in the region.
