After a large government-supported campaign, the airport plans to reopen.

TUI has also announced the possibility of resuming flights to destinations previously available from the airport, including Alicante, Malaga, and Tenerife.

“This is a topic we are really discussing,” said TUI CEO Neil Swanson at the ABTA conference in Mallorca, as reported by Travel Gossip.
“We used to be based at this airport, and this is part of our ongoing negotiations.”

Negotiations with Other Airlines

Not only TUI is considering the possibility of resuming flights from the airport. MP for Doncaster East and Isle of Axholme, Lee Pitcher, confirmed that negotiations are also underway with Ryanair.

“We had a positive meeting with Ryanair representatives, led by the head of public affairs,” he shared.
“We discussed Ryanair's position regarding Doncaster Sheffield Airport, and I am glad that they agreed to cooperate with Fly Doncaster, which will manage the airport along with an international operator from Munich.”

Wizz Air, which also operated flights from this airport, has not made any official statements about a possible return yet.

Jet2 CEO Steve Heapy noted at the ABTA conference that the company “is in talks with many airports,” but did not confirm any plans regarding Doncaster Sheffield.

Prospects for the Airport's Recovery

Doncaster Sheffield Airport aims to reopen as soon as next year. However, South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard warned that this is unlikely, as initially, only cargo flights may resume in 2027, while passenger flights may only start in 2028.

Recently, a package of £160 million has been approved for the refurbishment of the runways.

Oliver Coppard, the mayor of South Yorkshire, and representatives from the four regional councils supported the allocation of £160 million for the restoration of the runways.

“The reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport will be a great achievement for our communities and businesses in South Yorkshire, opening up new opportunities for connectivity, job creation, and economic growth,” commented Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport opened in 2005, originally named Robin Hood Airport, and changed its name to the current one in 2016. During its operation, the airport offered flights to 50 destinations in Europe, including Paris, Berlin, and Dubrovnik.

The prospects for the recovery of Doncaster Sheffield Airport are causing discussions among airlines and local authorities. The reopening of the airport could be a significant step toward reviving tourist flows and improving the economic situation in the region, which currently faces difficulties. It is worth monitoring developments, as the response of airlines to these initiatives will be key to their implementation.
