From 2026, the fee for entry into the EU will increase to 20 euros: what awaits Ukrainians

According to inkorr.com: From 2026, Ukrainians planning to travel to Schengen countries will need to prepare for new requirements: the cost of entry will rise to 20 euros as part of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). This innovation, proposed by the European Commission, aims to replenish the EU budget, but it may complicate travel for Ukrainian citizens. This information was reported by

What is the ETIAS system

ETIAS, which will come into effect by the end of 2026, is an electronic authorization for citizens of countries with visa-free regimes with the EU, including Ukraine. It is not a visa, but a permit that will be valid for three years or until the passport expires. It allows staying in the for up to 90 days within every 180 days.

The procedure for obtaining the permit is simple and accessible online, but its cost will increase from 7 to 20 euros. Persons under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the fee but also need to apply. The expected changes are as follows:

  • ETIAS fee: 20 euros for individuals aged 18 to 70.
  • Validity period of the permit: 3 years or until the passport expires.
  • Applicable countries: all Schengen zone states.

Change of entry rules to the EU from October 12, 2025

From October 12, 2025, the EU will implement the Entry/Exit System (EES), which will replace traditional passport stamps with digital biometric data records – fingerprints and facial photographs. This will affect all non-EU residents, including Ukrainians, and will impact tourists and business travelers. The system will be implemented at all Schengen border crossings, which may slow down border crossing in the initial months.

For Ukrainians who frequently visit the Czech Republic, Poland, or other EU countries, these changes will mean new costs and requirements to plan their trips in advance. In 2022, following the outbreak of the war, many Ukrainians received temporary protection in the EU, but for tourist or short-term visits, ETIAS will become mandatory.

In connection with these innovations, Ukrainians should familiarize themselves with the new requirements in advance to avoid inconveniences during travel. Preparing for visits to Schengen countries will now require more attention and patience, as additional costs and changes in procedures may affect the number of trips and their organization.
