A cable of Russian "Rostelecom" has been severed in the Baltic Sea.
Finland is repairing the damaged Russian cable
A Russian cable was damaged in Finland's exclusive economic zone. The repair work is being monitored by the coast guard. This information was reported by the media.
Information has also come from Russia about the damage to the undersea "Rostelecom" cable in the Baltic Sea. It is reported that this happened due to external influence, and restoration works are ongoing.
According to Yle, there are two cables affected. One of them, named "Baltika," is already under repair under the supervision of the Gulf of Finland coast guard. A Russian ship is responsible for restoring the cable.
Damage to Russian cables in the Gulf of Finland
Preparation manager at the Ministry of Employment and Economy Kari Klemm noted that two cables connecting St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad were severed in the Gulf of Finland. They reported this back in early January.
According to Klemm's estimates, the cable repair will take about a week depending on weather conditions. He also did not comment on whether there is a connection between the damage to the Russian cables and the severing of cables in the Gulf of Finland at Christmas.
Damage to undersea cables between Estonia and Finland
It should be noted that on December 26, 2024, disruptions were detected in the operation of three undersea communication cables between Estonia and Finland. This was reported by telecommunications companies Elisa Eesti AS and CITIC Telecom CPC.
The cost of repairing the EstLink 2 electric cable between Finland and Estonia will exceed 30 million euros.
NATO and Sweden are engaged in the protection of the Baltic Sea
Sweden has also decided to send three military ships and a reconnaissance aircraft on a NATO mission to protect the Baltic Sea. NATO, for its part, plans to protect critically important facilities in the Baltic Sea with the help of ten ships.
