Kyiv proposes to rename the metro station 'Akademmisstechko' in honor of Vasyl Stus.
According to ТСН: A new initiative has emerged in Kyiv regarding the renaming of transport facilities. It is proposed to rename the metro station 'Akademmisstechko' in honor of the Ukrainian poet and dissident Vasyl Stus.
This proposal is being discussed in a registered petition to the Kyiv City Council.
What is being proposed and why
The author of the petition emphasizes that the name 'Vasyl Stus' is appropriate and symbolic. The poet lived nearby this station on Chornobyl Street during the 1970s and 1980s, where he worked, creating his works and spending a significant part of his life.
The document states that Stus is one of the important figures of Ukrainian cultural resistance in the 20th century. He died in a Soviet camp, fighting for his right to remain Ukrainian. The initiator believes that renaming the station would be a worthy tribute to his memory.
Why they want to abandon the name 'Akademmisstechko'
The petition claims that 'Akademmisstechko' is a typical Soviet toponym that is associated with scientific quarters and is repeated in many cities of the post-Soviet space, lacking a unique Kyiv history. The author believes that this name has lost its relevance and symbolic meaning.
How the petition is progressing
In order for the initiative to be considered by the deputies of the Kyiv City Council, the document must gather 6,000 signatures within 60 days from the moment of publication.
It is also worth noting that earlier, the issue of the inconformity of the names of two branches of 'Ukrzaliznytsia' to the requirements of the law prohibiting the propaganda of Russian imperial policy was raised.
This initiative emphasizes the importance of remembering outstanding Ukrainians and their contributions to culture. At the same time, the discussion of renaming transport facilities reflects society's efforts to distance itself from Soviet traditions and seek new symbols for the city. The results of the voting on the petition may indicate how Kyiv residents feel about their cultural values and historical heritage.
