Latvian president on Trump-Putin meeting: will there be peace in Ukraine.
Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs expressed his opinion on the meeting between American leader Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in Alaska. He noted that it will soon become clear whether Russia will continue to buy time or show a willingness to end the war in Ukraine.
Rinkēvičs believes that the Trump-Putin meeting should be seen as one of the elements of a complex process aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine. He observed that there is still no decision on a ceasefire, and Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine.
Rinkēvičs also emphasized that the U.S. administration and President Trump are actively consulting with leaders of European countries and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss further steps regarding a possible peace agreement. He believes that the process may face difficulties and will require additional diplomatic efforts.
The upcoming week may be tense, as Trump is scheduled to meet with Zelensky on August 18. According to Rinkēvičs, this meeting will help understand whether there are real opportunities to achieve peace in Ukraine or whether Russia intends to use various tactics to stall and undermine the peace agreement.
In talks with European leaders, Trump also expressed readiness to provide Ukraine with security guarantees.
It was also reported that European leaders are invited to the meeting of Trump and Zelensky on August 18.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet with American leader Donald Trump on August 18. This will contribute to further diplomatic negotiations regarding the situation in Ukraine and the possibilities of concluding a peace agreement with Russia. The security of Ukraine and peace in the region remain on the agenda and require serious efforts to achieve stability.
