In the city of Magdeburg, located in Germany, an attack occurred on visitors at the Christmas market. A car driver surged into a crowd of people, resulting in more than 20 injuries.
According to BILD, the incident happened at 19:04 local time. A representative of the regional government, Matthias Schuppe, confirmed the attack, as reported by MDR Sachsen-Anhalt. Preliminary information indicates that the attacker used a dark BMW car.
Witnesses report that the vehicle changed direction and targeted the crowd near the town hall. The driver was apprehended immediately after the incident. There is a possibility that there may be fatalities as a result of the attack.
The organizers decided to close the Christmas market and urged people to leave the city center. According to Mitteldeutsche Zeitung, the city of Halle, which is 80 kilometers from the site of the incident, has heightened security at its Christmas market. According to Tobias Teschner, the head of security in Halle, local hospitals are preparing to receive the injured.
The police are conducting a thorough inspection of the Christmas market area to check for explosives.
