Russian Forces Target Ukrainian Rescuers in Kramatorsk and Zaporizhzhia: Emergency Worker Wounded.
Attacks on Emergency Personnel in Ukraine
According to UATV: On July 17, 2023, Russian troops struck rescue workers in the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, leaving one employee of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) with shrapnel injuries. The assault on the rescuers occurred in Kramatorsk, where a fire and rescue unit came under fire. The attack partially destroyed the building's outer wall and damaged the roof, interfloor ceilings, service rooms, furniture, and windows.
Meanwhile, in the Zaporizhzhia region, a Russian drone targeted rescuers who were extinguishing a blaze triggered by an earlier bombardment. These strikes resulted in one rescuer suffering shrapnel wounds, and he is currently hospitalized.
Rescuers Face Perilous Conditions
Such actions by Russian forces jeopardize the safety of emergency personnel who are carrying out their duties amid crises. The rapid containment of a 130-square-meter fire in Kramatorsk by rescuers further highlights the extreme challenges that emergency services encounter in combat zones.
These attacks on rescue workers underscore the hazardous environment in which Ukraine's emergency services operate, especially in areas of active fighting. The incidents in Kramatorsk and Zaporizhzhia demonstrate the ongoing threat to civilians and rescue teams striving to save lives during wartime.
The Ukrainian government and the international community must address these events to ensure the protection of rescuers and guarantee their safety while performing their duties.
