Editor Warns of Growing Danger for Passengers in Sumy Region Amid Russian Attacks.
Rising Threats in Sumy Region’s Border Communities
According to Espreso.tv: Passengers traveling by rail or car in the border communities of Ukraine’s Sumy region face increasing danger due to ongoing attacks by Russian forces. Natalia Kalinichenko, editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Bilopilshchyna" and head of the NGO "Association of Regional Media of Sumshchyna," highlights the severity of the situation, which has escalated over the past week. Recent large-scale strikes on border communities have sparked alarm and concern among local residents.
On July 16, the Security Service of Ukraine confirmed two new instances of Russia using munitions containing depleted uranium. This development further underscores the grave risks facing civilians in the area.
It’s extremely dangerous. This is something of a risky and reckless endeavor.
Natalia Kalinichenko
She also noted that despite the deployment of anti-drone nets between Sumy and Bilopillia, the threat to people remains undiminished.
Even what happened today—last night in Sumy, nine KABs (guided aerial bombs) hit the city center in just 24 hours. This is outright terror.
Natalia Kalinichenko
Kalinichenko pointed out that when a KAB is launched, no sensory equipment can detect it, increasing the likelihood of tragic outcomes. 'When a KAB flies, no sensor or device picks it up, so many people—mostly those outdoors—die from shrapnel and debris caused by these bombs,' she added.
Impact on Local Residents
As a result, the situation in Sumy region remains tense, with the risk to residents’ lives and health growing steadily. There is an urgent need to implement safety measures and raise public awareness.
The situation in Sumy region illustrates the far-reaching consequences of the armed conflict in Ukraine, where border communities face constant threats from the aggressor. The mounting danger for local residents underscores the necessity of strengthening security protocols and launching information campaigns to better prepare the population for potential emergencies. It is critical that relevant authorities take action to protect civilians and ensure their safety.
