Kherson's Public Transit Crisis Amid Drone Strikes

According to UATV: Russian drone attacks have led to the suspension of public transport routes in parts of Kherson, leaving entire neighborhoods without bus or trolley service. Since the start of the year, over 100 local residents have suffered severe injuries, and numerous assaults on buses and trolleybuses have been recorded. This ongoing threat has drastically reshaped daily life in the city.

Since early 2023, Russian forces have targeted 43 buses and 8 trolleybuses carrying passengers. According to Alexander Tolokonnikov,

“just since the start of this year, the Russians have attacked 43 buses and eight trolleybuses.”
These attacks have wounded more than 100 people and killed over 10. Among the victims was Lyudmila, who was riding a minibus on March 11, 2023, when a Russian drone struck. She recounted:
“Both legs are broken, my feet too, and I have a concussion.”

Impact on Transportation Infrastructure

As a result of these strikes, the city’s transport map has been redrawn. Buses no longer enter three of Kherson’s neighborhoods. Georgiy noted,

“One of our buses was already refueling, and this one was approaching. Two buses were damaged. The driver is fine.”
Despite the danger, drivers continue to work. Alexander explained:
“It’s become a habit for me: you go out and work because it has to be done.”

Additionally, since the beginning of the year, 25 buses and 9 trolleybuses from the municipal fleet have been destroyed. Vadim Melnyk emphasized that

“every route bus, every trolleybus cannot be mistaken for any dual-use vehicle.”
This not only endangers passenger safety but also threatens the stability of Kherson’s public transport network.

The situation in Kherson remains critical, with relentless drone attacks severely limiting access to public transit and heightening risks for civilians. This crisis underscores the devastating impact of military operations on civilian infrastructure and public safety. The suspension of routes not only hinders residents' mobility but also disrupts the community’s normal rhythm, potentially leading to long-term consequences. Amid the constant threat, ensuring safety and maintaining transport access for those in need is vital. Local authorities and international organizations must urgently address this to restore security and stability in the region.
