A Seal Walked into a Pub in New Zealand: How the Unusual Visitor Was Rescued.
An Unexpected Guest at the Pub
According to ТСН: In one of the pubs in the town of Richmond on New Zealand's South Island, an unusual incident occurred: a young sea lion wandered in one evening. The animal walked through the hall and was captured on surveillance video before hiding under the dishwasher.
The co-owner of the establishment, Bella Evans, reported that at first the staff thought a dog had come in since pets are allowed in the pub. Upon closer inspection, the baristas realized they were dealing with a young seal that had apparently gotten lost during the so-called 'fool's season.' At this time, young seals often find themselves in unexpected places - from private homes to roadways.
Attempts by patrons to gently lead the animal outside ended in failure: the seal had successfully hidden under the dishwasher. To lure it out, the staff decided to use pizza toppings. While the rescue 'negotiations' were ongoing, one guest even brought a dog cage.
Rangers from the New Zealand Department of Conservation arrived on the scene, having already searched for this seal for several hours. According to department spokesperson Helen Otley, numerous reports had come in throughout the day about the animal spotted in various parts of Richmond.
After examination, the pup was taken to the nearest Rabbit Island, a safe place without dogs. Experts note that such 'adventures' are not anomalies: young seals can travel up to 15 km inland through rivers and streams, exploring new territories.
Evans also confessed that this was the first time she had to 'evict' a wild visitor. Despite this, the staff named the animal Fern and joked that the bar received a true 'seal of approval.'
This curious story highlights the importance of cautious treatment of wildlife, as young lost seals can pose a threat to both themselves and people. It is crucial that safety measures for them are organized promptly and professionally to avoid dangerous situations.
