Investigation Launched Into Pochayiv Lavra’s Ties With Banned Religious Group.
Probing the Connections of the Pochayiv Holy Dormition Lavra
According to Espreso.tv: A research team is set to examine the links between the Pochayiv Holy Dormition Lavra and a prohibited foreign religious organization, acting on a directive from the State Service of Ukraine for Ethnic Policy and Freedom of Conscience (SSUEPFC). The inquiry is scheduled to begin on June 24, 2026, following an order issued on June 19, 2026, under reference number N-106/11.
This investigation comes in the wake of the Ukrainian parliament’s passage of a bill on August 20, 2024, banning the activities of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) within the country. A significant portion of Ukrainian society supports the separation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) from the ROC, highlighting the relevance of this probe.
The State Service of Ukraine for Ethnic Policy and Freedom of Conscience has emphasized that
“the SSUEPFC operates strictly within the framework of current legislation and with respect for religious freedom,”drawing public attention to this commitment. This underscores the agency’s dedication to examining religious institutions’ affiliations within legal boundaries, while considering public sentiment and legislative initiatives. Consequently, the study aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding the Pochayiv Holy Dormition Lavra’s operations amid contemporary challenges in Ukraine’s religious policy.
Impact of the Investigation on the Religious Landscape
The examination of the Pochayiv Holy Dormition Lavra’s ties to the ROC is driven by shifts in Ukraine’s religious environment, notably the enactment of the law prohibiting ROC activities. This could significantly alter the country’s religious landscape and interfaith relations. The probe into the Lavra’s connections may yield fresh insights into potential influences from foreign religious entities on Ukrainian society and spirituality.
