New Polish traffic laws eliminate early penalty point write-offs for drivers.
Poland’s Updated Traffic Regulations
According to Novyny.live: Starting June 3, 2023, Poland introduced a major overhaul of its traffic laws, significantly tightening the rules on dangerous driving and introducing new requirements for both drivers and minors. These legal changes aim to improve road safety and cut down on the number of traffic accidents across the country.
Under the new system, drivers can no longer have penalty points for serious infractions removed ahead of schedule. Instead, anyone who accumulates points must now wait a full year for them to be cleared. For speeding more than 50 km/h over the limit, the maximum penalty is 15 points—a clear move to hold drivers more accountable for reckless behavior.
Stronger Child Safety Measures
Another key part of the reform focuses on protecting children. All minors under 16 are now required to wear protective helmets while riding. If a child is caught without one, the driver faces a fine of 100 Polish zloty (over 1,200 Ukrainian hryvnia). This measure is designed to reduce the risk of head injuries in traffic.
Additionally, the new law formally defines illegal street racing in legal terms, marking an important step in cracking down on this dangerous activity. Together, these changes reflect the Polish government’s commitment to making roads safer and reducing serious crashes.
These updated traffic rules are part of a broader national strategy to boost road safety and lower fatalities, especially among young people. Given the high rate of accidents involving minors, such measures could have a meaningful impact on overall traffic safety.
Polish authorities hope these changes will encourage drivers to take traffic laws more seriously and lower risks for everyone on the road.
