Disillusionment in Russia Amid the War with Ukraine

According to UATV: As the protracted war with Ukraine drags on and economic troubles mount, frustration is spreading among both the Russian public and its elite. This discontent has become visible in the pointed questions directed at President Vladimir Putin regarding the war’s conduct and the possibility of peace talks. Ukraine has been pushing to restart negotiations, but Moscow shows little interest in entering discussions from a position of weakness.

Dr. Liudmyla Pokrovshchuk, speaking on the FREEДОМ television channel, noted a "boiling over of dissatisfaction" in Russia, pointing out that even journalists have begun asking Putin "uncomfortable questions." She emphasized that

"Russia has no victories on the front; the initiative now lies with Ukraine"
—a sign of a major shift on the battlefield that has left Moscow in a difficult spot.

Negotiations and Economic Pressures

Pokrovshchuk also observed that Russia is attempting to split the negotiation process into two parallel tracks, a move that could complicate reaching a unified agreement. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remains open to various solutions proposed by European partners.

Economic strains in Russia, compounded by a lack of battlefield successes, are also shaping the Kremlin’s approach to talks. According to Pokrovshchuk,

"when the initiative, both in terms of long-range sanctions and the situation on the front, lies with Ukraine, we understand that Russia does not want to enter negotiations from a weak position."
This suggests the Kremlin is stalling until it can strengthen its hand.

In this context, the front-line situation and economic challenges are becoming key factors in determining Russia’s next moves, while also opening new opportunities for Ukraine in peace negotiations.

The rising disillusionment inside Russia could signal potential shifts in the country’s domestic politics, as pressure from the public and elites on Putin intensifies. At the same time, Ukraine’s position—bolstered by battlefield gains and international support—may create fresh dynamics in peace talks. This could also influence the Kremlin’s strategic decisions in the near future, as the economy continues to deteriorate and military setbacks erode trust in the leadership.
