In the village of 80 Shevchenkos: how the descendants of the Kobzar live in Cherkasy region.
A resident of the village of Shevchenkove in the Zvenyhorod district has discovered family ties to the great Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko. She even has a portrait of the poet with 'Kobzar' at the entrance to her house. This village is the native land of Taras Shevchenko.
The head of the Shevchenkiv rural territorial community, Serhii Smalko, reported that about 80 people in the village have the surname Shevchenko. Some of them are relatives of Taras, with some families documented, but there are also uninvestigated Shevchenko relatives.
Resident Oksana Pohrybna also claims to be a relative of the poet, but from his brother Mykyta's line. She has a family photo that possibly includes Mykyta Shevchenko, Taras's brother. Oksana's family embroiders and sews, a skill passed down from ancestors who were also connected to embroidery. Oksana herself is engaged in embroidery and making traditional dolls based on Shevchenko's works. She considers her ancestor a prophet and believes that if his teachings were followed, there would be no wars.
Today, March 9, marks the birthday of Taras Shevchenko, the great Ukrainian poet and artist. This date is one of the most important for Ukrainian culture, as Shevchenko became a symbol of the spirituality of the Ukrainian people.
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky also signed a decree granting the National Shevchenko Prize for 2025.
