AI has already taken jobs from 55 thousand Americans: what is happening in the labor market.
According to Korrespondent.net: In the US, estimates have been made on how many workers could lose their jobs due to the implementation of artificial intelligence. According to the analytical firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, by 2025, about 55 thousand people may find themselves unemployed due to the active use of AI.
Increase in layoffs in the country
Since the beginning of the year, over 1.17 million layoffs have been recorded in the US — the highest figure since 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the economy hard. At that time, approximately 2.2 million layoffs were registered in the country.
In the autumn period, employers actively reduced personnel. In October, companies announced layoffs of 153 thousand employees, and in November — another 71 thousand. According to analysts' estimates, about 7 thousand jobs are lost every month due to the impact of artificial intelligence.
Reasons for transitioning to AI
Business interest in artificial intelligence is growing due to several factors. Among them are accelerating inflation and rising costs, particularly due to changes in tariff policies. In this context, automation and the application of algorithms are perceived as a quick way to reduce costs and increase efficiency.
Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology previously determined that artificial intelligence is capable of replacing up to 11.7% of jobs in the American market, which could save employers around $1.2 trillion.
Different perspectives among experts
However, not all experts believe that AI is the main reason for layoffs. Some argue that new technologies have become a convenient explanation for staffing decisions. Researcher from the Oxford Internet Institute Fabian Stephanie notes:
“In previous years, many companies hired an excess number of workers, and the current cuts are more an attempt to correct those mistakes than a direct result of the development of artificial intelligence.”
Thus, the question of the impact of artificial intelligence on the labor market remains debatable.
Ukraine has outlined a strategy for implementing AI in business.
Events in the US are causing concern not only in American society but also in other countries, including Ukraine. As experience shows, the rapid implementation of artificial intelligence can significantly change the labor market. It is important to find a balance between technological progress and social responsibility to avoid massive job losses. Countries are looking for ways to adapt to new conditions, and Ukraine also needs clear strategies to implement modern technologies without significant losses for the population.
