According to The Sun: Newcastle Airport in the UK has launched a major £60 million expansion project to cope with new budget airline flights.

One of the main changes will be a new large departure hall, which will also feature new toilets and dining areas. There are also plans to expand the international baggage arrival area, where four belts will be launched next summer.

The terminal expansion, which will occupy three floors, will include a new security area, additional check-in desks, and new self-service baggage terminals.

As the airport plans to handle six million passengers next year, it hopes to increase that number to nine million by 2040 with the addition of new flights.

New routes and airlines

Recently, several budget airlines have announced new destinations. For example, Jet2 announced flights to Marrakech in Morocco and Budapest in Hungary, which will operate on Tuesdays, Fridays, and every Sunday.

Ryanair plans to base a third aircraft in Newcastle for the winter 2025/26 season and launch new winter routes, including to Brussels, Gdansk, and Wroclaw.

easyJet has also announced 11 new routes for the summer of 2026, including destinations to Antalya, Rhodes, Faro, and other cities.

In the future, there are plans for a runway expansion, which will increase the number of aircraft parking spots, improving passenger service and reducing the need to transport them between the terminal and the aircraft.

The airport also plans to continue work on extending the runway to support further development.
