Contact Group Meeting Delivers Major Aid Package
According to UATV: During a February 12 meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, which unites over 50 partner nations, a substantial $38 billion aid package was secured for Ukraine. This funding is designated for drones, air defense systems (including missiles for Patriot batteries), and artillery, underscoring the sustained international commitment to Ukraine's military efforts. The Contact Group has become a primary forum for coordinating military aid to Kyiv since Russia's full-scale invasion.
Key Contributors and Their Pledges
The major donors and their specific contributions announced at the meeting include:
- Norway committed $7 billion, allocated as follows:
- $1.5 billion for drone procurement,
- $700 million for air defense development,
- $200 million for artillery,
- $125 million for the PURL program.
- Germany announced at least €1 billion for Ukrainian drones as part of its total €11.5 billion aid budget. A significant development was the opening of the first German-Ukrainian drone manufacturing enterprise in Munich.
- Lithuania has allocated over $1 billion in military assistance, with $265 million planned for delivery in 2023.
- The United Kingdom declared a new air defense support package worth half a billion pounds sterling.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the initiative, stating:
“It is excellent that we have launched our first major joint production effort in Europe.”
Roberts Kaunas, a Lithuanian representative, emphasized the urgency of the support, saying:
“We hear Ukraine's urgent needs.”Similarly, John Healey, a UK representative, announced: “Today I am declaring a new package of urgent air defense support.”
The Contact Group continues its work to bolster Ukraine's military capabilities, with a strategic focus on drones, air defense, and artillery. This support is critical for strengthening Ukraine's defensive posture against ongoing aerial and ground threats.
