157 Prisoners Return to Ukraine Following Abu Dhabi Talks: Key Participants and Outcomes.
Abu Dhabi Negotiations
According to UATV: A second round of trilateral talks involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia concluded in Abu Dhabi on February 5, 2023. The closed-door negotiations, attended by high-ranking officials from all three nations, successfully unblocked the process for a prisoner exchange. As a result, 157 individuals—comprising 150 military personnel and 7 civilians—were repatriated to Ukraine. Such exchanges are rare diplomatic achievements in the ongoing conflict.
The Ukrainian delegation included:
- Rustem Umerov
- Kyrylo Budanov
- Sergiy Kyslytsya
- Andrii Gnatov
- Oleksandr Bevz
- David Arakhamia
Representing the United States were:
- Steve Witkoff
- Jared Kushner
- U.S. Army Secretary Daniel Driskoll
The Russian delegation was led by Igor Kostyukov. During the discussions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated:
“Ukraine will not agree to any solutions that entail a loss of sovereignty, and emphasized that Kyiv is ready for all working formats capable of genuinely bringing peace closer.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Against the backdrop of these talks, an assassination attempt occurred in Moscow targeting Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev, who was wounded and remains hospitalized. Alexeyev is under sanctions from several countries. Commenting on the negotiation results, Donald Trump noted they were 'very, very good' and pertained to Russia-Ukraine relations. While this round did not produce a major breakthrough, it concluded with the positive outcome of returning Ukrainian citizens.
Significance of the Talks
The Abu Dhabi negotiations mark a significant step in the search for pathways to a peaceful resolution of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The return of 157 citizens demonstrates tangible progress on the humanitarian front, even as core political issues remain unresolved. Future rounds of dialogue could prove decisive for the trajectory of the situation, with both sides expressing a willingness to continue talks, albeit with clear conditions regarding Ukraine's sovereignty.
