Kyiv offers drone defense expertise for the release of the Strait of Hormuz.
Middle East Stability: Ukrainian Expertise as the Key
According to UATV: Ukraine is increasingly establishing itself as an important player for stability in the Middle East. The country is offering its expertise in securing maritime routes and supporting international efforts to end the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. A visit by the Ukrainian president to the region, during which defense agreements with Gulf States were signed, demonstrates the interest in Ukrainian methods for protecting critical infrastructure from drone attacks.
Since the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) blocked the strait, shipping traffic has plummeted by 97 percent. Previously, around 21 million barrels of oil were transported daily through this strategically vital route – a central factor for the world economy. As a result, gas prices in Europe rose by 60 percent alone in the first week of the crisis, underscoring the global importance of this waterway.
Increasing Tensions in the Region
The United Arab Emirates have also signaled interest in potentially joining a military operation against Iran – a sign of the growing tension. President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized:
“It is particularly about the use of sea drones and the establishment of a tiered defense system.”This indicates that Ukraine is actively looking to contribute to international security efforts for maritime transport.
Andriy Sybiha commented on the situation, stating:
“Iran's attempts to block freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz are painfully familiar to Ukraine.”This makes it clear: Ukraine has experience with similar challenges and is ready to share this knowledge with other countries facing comparable problems.
Overall, Ukraine is striving to become a significant partner for the Gulf States, which are interested in stable and secure maritime routes, using its security expertise. The situation highlights not only the strategic relevance of the Strait of Hormuz for global economy and security but also the potential for deeper cooperation between Kyiv and Middle Eastern states. Given the increasing tensions, Ukrainian involvement in international initiatives could not only contribute to stabilizing maritime traffic but also strengthen Kyiv's geopolitical position on the world stage.
