New Talks on Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Planned Between Ukraine, US, and Russia.
Trilateral Discussions Set to Resume
According to TSN.ua: Ukraine, the United States, and Russia are preparing to hold a new round of three-way talks, with the primary focus being the management of the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed the planned discussions, underscoring their critical importance. The Zaporizhzhia plant is Europe's largest nuclear facility, making its security a matter of urgent international concern.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha further stated that Zelenskyy is prepared to engage in direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He emphasized that such a meeting is necessary to address territorial disputes and the precarious situation surrounding the nuclear plant. Sybiha was quoted as saying,
"To resolve issues of territories and the ZNPP, the president is ready to meet with Putin and discuss them directly."
Disputed Control of the Nuclear Facility
Russia has reportedly promoted the idea of splitting control of the Zaporizhzhia plant between itself and Ukraine, a proposal that has caused significant alarm in Kyiv and among international partners. A follow-up meeting is scheduled based on the outcomes of prior talks in Geneva. According to an unnamed source, energy specialists may also be brought into these future negotiations, highlighting the technical complexity and high stakes involved.
The upcoming negotiations over the plant's management are vital not only for Ukraine's security but for that of the wider region. Any incident at the facility could have catastrophic consequences, elevating these talks beyond a bilateral dispute to a matter of global safety. The outcome is likely to influence the broader political and military dynamics of the ongoing conflict.
