Official Comments on the New Laser Defense System

According to Novyny.live: At the Munich Security Conference on February 14, Pavlo Paliisa, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, commented on reports from The Atlantic regarding a new laser-based air defense system developed by Ukrainian engineers. The system, named Sunray, is reportedly capable of effectively destroying enemy drones.

Sunray System's Technical Capabilities

Visually resembling an amateur telescope, the Sunray laser can be mounted on a pickup truck's roof. It operates silently and emits no visible light, making it a potent tool against unmanned aerial vehicles. In a demonstration, the laser managed to set a drone ablaze within seconds, indicating a high degree of effectiveness. This development highlights Ukraine's push for innovative, cost-effective defense solutions against the persistent threat of Russian drone attacks.

Simultaneously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stressed the continued need for conventional anti-aircraft missiles, pointing to a critical shortage within Ukraine's Air Force for repelling Russian strikes.

The development of the Sunray laser system underscores Ukraine's active efforts to enhance its air defense technologies amid the ongoing war. It could mark a significant step in bolstering defensive capabilities, particularly against the growing drone threat. However, the concurrent shortage of traditional missiles emphasizes the necessity for a comprehensive, multi-layered approach to the nation's defense needs.
