Ukraine's Military Commander Calls for Starlink Alternatives and Drone Production Boost.
The Need for Starlink Alternatives
According to Novyny.live: At the YES Meeting organized by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation, Deputy Commander of the 21st Separate Rifle Battalion, Igor Firsov, argued that Ukraine must find alternatives to Starlink technology and ramp up drone production in cooperation with Europe. This issue has gained urgency in the context of the ongoing full-scale war, which began on February 24, 2022. The reliance on a single, foreign-controlled communications system presents a significant strategic vulnerability for Ukraine's military operations.
Firsov stressed the importance of preparing for future challenges, stating,
"Tomorrow, anything could happen; Starlink could fail or be broken"- Igor Firsov. He emphasized that maintaining communication with the front lines is critical for combat effectiveness. The deputy commander also highlighted the necessity of constructing new factories and developing infrastructure, including within Europe.
"We need to build more factories, we need to prepare the infrastructure"- Igor Firsov.
Security Challenges for Ukraine
Furthermore, Firsov pointed out that Russia possesses significant expertise and production capacity in drones, raising concerns for Ukraine's security. A previous Starlink disconnection occurred due to the terminals being used to guide drone attacks, which, according to MP Roman Kostenko, affected both sides of the conflict. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has reported enemy attempts to restore access to the Starlink system, underscoring the technology's vital role in warfare.
In modern military conflicts, the issues of technological support and drone manufacturing are becoming increasingly critical. Ukraine's actions in this direction could significantly impact its ability to counter future threats. Seeking new technological solutions and forging partnerships with European nations could prove a decisive factor in strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities and its readiness for various scenarios on the battlefield.
