Assessing Russian Military Logistics in Southern Ukraine

According to Espreso.tv: Military expert Pavlo Lakiichuk, a captain first rank and head of security programs at the Center for Globalistics "Strategy XXI," analyzes how attacks on the Crimea Bridge and the Kerch ferry crossing have disrupted supply routes for Russian forces in southern Ukraine. These strikes have significantly complicated logistics for the Russian military, creating new vulnerabilities in their operational capacity.

The Crimea Bridge, a critical supply artery, was disabled by Ukraine’s Security Service in 2023. During that attack, a section of the road bridge collapsed, and fuel tankers on the railway bridge caught fire, destroying a key logistics link. These events severely hampered Russia’s ability to move resources to its troops in southern Ukraine.

Strategic Strikes and Their Consequences

Lakiichuk notes that establishing a logistics lockdown for the enemy in the south is a more achievable objective than in the east.

“By creating this logistics lockdown for the enemy in the south, Ukrainians are making it harder for them—unlike in the east, this is simpler to accomplish in the south,” the expert explains.
Consequently, strikes on key logistics infrastructure are steadily reducing the Russian military’s capabilities.

The primary supply routes for Russian forces include:

  • the land corridor;
  • the Kerch artery across the Kerch Strait.

Lakiichuk also points out that Russia is trying to redirect supplies via the Sea of Azov, but “even this route is no longer safe.” This underscores how attacks on logistics hubs are worsening the situation for Russian troops.

Recent strikes, including those on the Slavneft-YANOS oil refinery in Yaroslavl and Russia’s largest refinery in Omsk, demonstrate Ukraine’s expanding ability to target occupiers’ logistics. Lakiichuk emphasizes that

“the latest strikes show Ukraine’s growing capacity to hit enemy logistics,”
further compounding challenges for Russian forces.

In summary, attacks on critical logistics nodes like the Crimea Bridge and oil refineries are profoundly affecting Russia’s ability to supply its troops in southern Ukraine. Supply routes are becoming increasingly unsafe, highlighting the importance of strategic strikes in Ukraine’s current conflict strategy.

Given the deteriorating logistics situation for Russian forces, strikes on key infrastructure assets showcase the effectiveness of Ukraine’s approach against the aggressor. This not only limits Russia’s resource supply capabilities but also shifts the balance of power in southern Ukraine. Sustaining and advancing such strategic operations remains crucial for regional stability and security moving forward.
