Italian becomes the tenth language of the Ukrainian foreign broadcaster: The voice behind FREEДОМ.
A channel by Kateryna Nesterenko
According to UATV: Since the beginning of Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine, Kateryna Nesterenko has been operating her own YouTube channel. There, she prepares content from the Ukrainian TV channel FREEДОМ for an Italian-speaking audience. Her goal: to inform about the situation in Ukraine and the economic difficulties in Russia. The channel emerged from the necessity to convey the truth about the aggressor's crimes and the Ukrainian resistance to the world.
The channel 'Katya Nesterenko' launched simultaneously with the onset of the full-scale war and has become an important tool for reaching international audiences. Italian is now the tenth language in which the Ukrainian foreign broadcasting service broadcasts. The content of the channel is available in nine languages:
- Ukrainian
- Russian
- English
- Spanish
- Portuguese
- German
- Turkish
- Arabic
- Polish
An impressive 99.3 percent of all international views come from abroad – and of those, 85 percent are from Italy. Particularly high view counts are reported from the cities of Milan, Rome, Bologna, Turin, and Naples. Kateryna Nesterenko explained:
'The channel emerged at the beginning of the large-scale invasion, when it was crucial to show the world the truth about Russia's crimes and the Ukrainian resistance.'
Another important factor is the support from Ukrainian media. Vadym Lubchak emphasized:
'It is very important for us that Italians and other people whose mother tongue is Italian have even better access to the truth about Ukraine.'
The FREEДОМ channel belongs to a network of state Ukrainian TV channels, which also includes Dom, UATV.English, UATV.Arabic, UATV.Español, The Gaze, UATV.Português, UATV.Deutsch, UATV.Türkçe, and UATV po polsku.
The importance of informational support
Initiatives like Kateryna Nesterenko's YouTube channel help spread reliable information about the events in Ukraine. They enable the international audience to better understand the situation and challenges the country faces in the war.
Given the ongoing war in Ukraine, support from international media and the translation of content into various languages is crucial. Only then can an objective picture of events emerge. Kateryna Nesterenko's channel plays a key role in raising awareness among the Italian audience about the situation in Ukraine. This can shape public opinion and generate international political pressure. The project shows how media can act as an instrument of social responsibility and support for a country during times of crisis.
