Strikes on the Kapustin Yar Range

According to TSN.ua: In January 2026, Ukrainian defense forces conducted a series of strikes on the Kapustin Yar military range in Russia. This facility, located in the northwestern part of Astrakhan Oblast, had been used by Russia to launch 'Oreshnik' rockets against Ukrainian positions. The Ukrainian General Staff confirmed the attack as part of its strategic military operations. This strike demonstrates Ukraine's growing capability to target key Russian military infrastructure deep behind the front lines.

The New 'Flamingo' Missile

Amidst these developments, Ukraine has unveiled a new long-range missile system. The FP-5 'Flamingo' missile, one of the largest in the world, has a reported range of up to 3,000 km and can land within 14 meters of its target. It is capable of delivering a payload of up to 1,150 kg. The first reports of this missile emerged on August 17, with a photograph taken by Ukrainian photojournalist Yefrem Lukatsky on August 14.

These events highlight the ongoing technological evolution within the conflict. The strikes on Kapustin Yar and the development of the 'Flamingo' missile signify a shift in Ukrainian tactical approaches and its ability to leverage new military technologies. Such advancements are considered critical for Ukraine's national security, potentially altering the regional balance of power by enabling precise, long-range strikes.
