SBU Confirms Deliberate Strike on Kyiv Pechersk Lavra by Russian Geran-2 Drone.
Strike on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra
According to UATV: Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has confirmed that a Russian 'Geran-2' drone struck the grounds of the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery complex during the night of June 15. The attack occurred at approximately 1:50 a.m., causing damage to roof structures, domes, walls, and windows of the cathedral. Fragments of the drone recovered at the scene corroborate the assault.
About the Geran-2 Drone
The Geran-2 is Russia's locally produced version of the Iranian Shahed kamikaze drone. Certain components of this unmanned aerial vehicle are manufactured within Russia, specifically in the Alabuga special economic zone. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that the damaged structures will be restored.
This incident underscores the ongoing armed conflict and the threats faced by Ukraine's historical and cultural landmarks. The attack on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, one of the country's most significant cultural and religious sites, highlights the escalating violence in the Ukraine-Russia war. Damage to such sites raises alarm not only locally but also internationally, emphasizing the risks to cultural heritage during wartime.
Restoration of the damaged buildings will be a crucial step in preserving Ukraine's national identity and historical memory.
