Administrative Penalties for Violating Fishing Regulations in Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: Starting in 2026, anglers in Ukraine face administrative liability for breaking fishing laws. Offenses such as fishing from an unregistered boat, using too many hooks, catching undersized fish, fishing in spawning or wintering areas, washing vehicles near water bodies, or boating during the spawning ban can result in a warning or a fine of up to 170 hryvnias.
- Fishing from an unregistered boat,
- Using an excessive number of hooks,
- Catching fish that are too small,
- Fishing in spawning or wintering zones,
- Washing cars near water bodies,
- Traveling by boat during the spawning prohibition period.
For more serious violations, fines range from 340 to 680 hryvnias.
Daily Catch Limits and Penalties for Illegal Fishing
Recreational anglers are limited to a daily catch of 3 kilograms. Additionally, illegally catching or destroying rare fish species carries fines of 340 to 850 hryvnias. For species listed in Ukraine's Red Book, fines are as follows:
- 510 to 850 hryvnias for private individuals,
- 850 to 1,360 hryvnias for officials.
Selling fish without proper documentation results in fines from 510 to 1,700 hryvnias, while selling Red Book-listed species can lead to penalties between 1,700 and 3,655 hryvnias.
Criminal liability applies when illegal fishing causes significant harm to the fishing industry. In the Desna River basin, damages start at over 41,000 hryvnias, while in the Dnipro River basin, they exceed 103,000 hryvnias. Unauthorized commercial fishing may result in fines from 17,000 to 51,000 hryvnias or up to three years of restricted freedom. Using electric current, explosives, or toxic substances can escalate fines to 85,000 hryvnias.
Adhering to fishing regulations is crucial not only for environmental protection but also to comply with the legal framework governing this activity. Anglers must stay informed about potential sanctions to avoid legal trouble.
These legislative updates aim to safeguard Ukraine's water resources and restore its fish stocks.
Raising fines for fishing violations is expected to curb illegal catches and help preserve rare fish species. Emphasizing ecological compliance is increasingly vital amid global climate shifts and environmental challenges facing the country.
