Palaou's Statement in Court: Zak Brown Didn't Want to Sign Piastri at McLaren.
Scandal Surrounding Piastri's Signing
According to The Sun: McLaren CEO Zak Brown, according to four-time IndyCar champion Álex Palou, wanted to avoid signing a contract with Oscar Piastri. These statements were made during testimony at the High Court in the UK, where McLaren Racing is filing a lawsuit for £15.4 million over alleged breach of contract and lost income.
GettyThe lawsuit was filed back in 2022 when Palou, a promising IndyCar driver, made a deal with McLaren that involved his move from Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) in hopes of getting into Formula 1. However, in 2023, serving as a reserve driver, Palou decided to refuse the contract and stay with CGR, as he believed that Piastri's signing diminished his chances for a spot in the Formula 1 team.
In his testimony, Palou stated:
“I was very upset, worried, and angry that McLaren signed another rookie instead of me.”
He also emphasized that Brown assured him in 2022 that signing Piastri “would not impact” his chances in Formula 1. According to Palou, Brown claimed that the decision to sign Piastri was made by the team led by Andreas Seidl.
Palou mentioned that he discussed the possibility of moving to AlphaTauri:
“Zak told me that Piastri’s performance would be evaluated compared to mine in 2024. From his perspective, my chances of getting a Formula 1 seat were not threatened by Oscar.”
This season, McLaren has faced criticism for favoritism towards its drivers — Piastri and Lando Norris, who are competing for the title in Formula 1. During the race in Singapore, Piastri clearly interrupted Brown on the team radio.
Brown vehemently denies all accusations that he was “stalling” with Palou. He stated that he never said Palou would be “under consideration” for a position in Formula 1. According to him, in 2023, Palou's position was an alternative in case Piastri did not perform well.
According to the lawsuit from McLaren, the claimed damages include a signing bonus of $400,000, losses from sponsorship, and the need to promote Pato O'Ward to the Formula 1 testing program. Palou's team disputes these claims.

The situation surrounding Piastri's contract and the allegations made by Palou raises questions about the ethics of management in major racing teams. This case could significantly impact future relationships between drivers and management and demonstrate how contractual issues can become stumbling blocks in a sport where competition for a spot on the team is extremely fierce.
