The government controls drug prices: how Ukrainians will be protected from pharmacy markups
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko announced the necessity to ensure availability of medicines for citizens in the conditions of severe frosts and electricity supply disruptions. She emphasized that
“medicines must be accessible to everyone, especially in conditions of cold at home due to shelling of energy systems and severe frosts”— Yulia Svyrydenko.
In response to the situation, the government instructed the Ministry of Health and the State Food Safety and Consumer Protection Service to constantly monitor drug prices. The Cabinet promises to actively respond and fine pharmacies in case of violations regarding markups. This is aimed at preventing abuses and ensuring Ukrainians have access to necessary medications.
Moreover, the Ministry of Health, together with the State Service of Medicines, will conduct weekly price monitoring in pharmacies, which will allow for prompt identification and response to price increases. The government has also initiated a large-scale reform of the pharmaceutical market aimed at improving the availability of medicinal products for the population.
The importance of accessibility to medicinal products
Ensuring the accessibility of medicinal products in the current crisis is critically important for Ukrainians. Considering the limited resources and socio-economic challenges, the government's response to the situation with drug prices can significantly affect the quality of life of the population, especially in the winter period. Price monitoring and the ability to fine pharmacies for abuses are steps that can reduce the risks of speculation and support citizens during this difficult time.
