Victor Yushchenko’s Message to Viktor Orbán

According to TSN.ua: Ukraine’s third president, Victor Yushchenko, has issued a public appeal to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, calling on him not to lose sight of the principles of liberty and the historical memory of the Hungarian people. In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Yushchenko stressed the shared importance of these values for both nations, noting that

“Ukraine today is bleeding for the very same values we once debated at the negotiating table”
.

The Significance of Historical Memory

Highlighting the need to preserve historical awareness, Yushchenko directly addressed Orbán with the plea:

“Viktor, stop and remember who you once were”
. He also urged the Hungarian leader to return to 'the light, to genuine European brotherhood,' reflecting a desire to mend and strengthen ties between Ukraine and Hungary.

In recent days, several developments in Hungary have raised concerns:

  • Oschadbank recalled its armored cash-collection vehicles from Hungary;
  • Reports emerged that $40 million, €35 million, and gold bullion remain seized and have not been released;
  • A Ukrainian citizen detained in Hungary was transferred to a hospital in critical condition.

These incidents could strain bilateral relations, underscoring the urgent need for dialogue and cooperation on matters affecting citizens and the economy.

Yushchenko’s appeal to Orbán goes beyond personal political ties, touching on broader geopolitical dynamics involving both Ukraine and Hungary. As both countries grapple with security and economic challenges, maintaining open communication and honoring historical memory has become increasingly vital. Rebuilding trust and collaboration between the two nations is essential for regional stability, especially in light of the pressures Ukraine currently faces.
