Danger Looms at Odessa’s City Hall

According to Novyny.live: Parts of the facade at Odessa’s city hall building have begun to break away, sparking concern among locals and pedestrians. Decorative stucco fragments are falling onto the sidewalk, posing a risk to public safety. In response, authorities have cordoned off the hazardous area with warning tape to prevent potential injuries.

Restoration Efforts Stalled

The building has faced structural issues for several years. In 2021, a tender was announced for the restoration of the Old Exchange building, with planned costs reaching 109 million 887 thousand hryvnias. The contract was awarded to 'Ukrspetsproekt,' a company that offered to complete the work for 93.9 million hryvnias. This firm previously handled the restoration of the Rusov House, demonstrating its experience in similar projects.

The restoration plan included:

  • reinforcing the foundation,
  • restoring the facade,
  • repairing floors,
  • installing a fire alarm system,
  • upgrading the water supply and sewage systems.

Constructed in 1837 under the design of architect Franz Boffo, the Odessa City Hall building stands as a key architectural landmark. However, despite the urgency of the restoration, the tender could not be finalized due to issues with the contractor, delaying essential work. The path to restoring the building remains uncertain, and the situation demands immediate attention.

The need to restore Odessa’s city hall goes beyond its historical and architectural significance—it also serves as a functional hub where critical community decisions are made. The presence of dangerous facade sections underscores the urgent need for municipal authorities to act swiftly to prevent harm to citizens. Resolving these challenges will require not only financial resources but also coordinated efforts from responsible agencies to establish effective collaboration with contractors.
