Ukrainian ecologists have released a hundred European hamsters into the steppe: how this will save the species.
A new stage of releasing European hamsters into the wild took place in southern Odesa region. Over a hundred animals have already been given a chance for a new life.
This was reported on the Facebook page of the public organization Rewilding Ukraine.
Ecologists say that another batch of a hundred animals has been released into their natural habitat in the Taraniv Steppe. Prior to this, they were cared for at the Hamster Rescue Center, where their health and adaptation were monitored.
Experts are confident that this is just the beginning of the population recovery and in the future, these animals will again become familiar sights in Ukrainian landscapes.
These rodents are widespread in meadow and forest-steppe regions, as well as in diverse grass steppes of Eurasia. They are the largest representatives of the hamster subfamily.
It should be noted that in the Odesa region, a lake that provides irrigation for over 12 thousand hectares of land is rapidly drying up.
European hamsters have once again been given a chance for new life after another release into the wild in southern Odesa region. This step is part of the population recovery of these animals, who ecologists hope will become a common sight in Ukrainian landscapes in the future.
