Ukraine plans to introduce mandatory certification for psychologists and psychotherapists.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, signed a draft law that stipulates that specialists must have a higher education and international level certification.

'Specialists in the field of mental health - individuals who provide assistance in this area must have the appropriate education, necessary professional knowledge and skills, as well as meet the legislative requirements for certification and/or accreditation,' the document states.

According to the draft law, specialists will be mandatory certified, and a National Commission will be created to coordinate the provision of services in the field of mental health.

Solving problems in the field through the draft law

Chairman of the Committee on National Health, Medical Assistance, and Medical Insurance Mykhailo Radutskyi stated that the draft law was developed taking into account the recommendations of WHO and the EU to preserve the mental health of the population.

In developing the project, the experience of implementing the All-Ukrainian Mental Health Program 'How are you?' created by Ukraine's First Lady Olena Zelenska was used.

Main provisions of the draft law

  • Clear distribution of responsibilities between the state, public organizations, and the private sector will ensure access to services at the community level.
  • Unified terminology, standardization of services, and a multidisciplinary approach to providing quality mental health services.
  • Establishment of a national commission to coordinate the provision of mental health services.
  • Implementation of certification for specialists to guarantee the quality of services provided to patients.
  • Creation of self-regulatory organizations that will train specialists in this field.

It is worth noting that some medical services in Ukraine are now paid.
