SBU Head Vasyl Malyuk Resigns: Who Will Lead the Special Service

According to ТСН: Today, SBU Chief Vasyl Malyuk announced his resignation.

He shared his decision on Telegram, noting:

“I am leaving my position as head of the Security Service. I will remain within the SBU system to implement world-class asymmetric operations that will continue to inflict maximum damage on the enemy. I am confident that a strong and modern special service is the key to the security of our state. The changes being implemented by the President of Ukraine in the defense sector are aimed at this, and I thank him.”

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that he met with Malyuk. During the conversation, he expressed gratitude for his efforts:

“I met with Vasyl Malyuk. I thanked him for his combat work and suggested that he focus specifically on this type of work. There should be more Ukrainian asymmetric operations against the occupier and the Russian state, more of our strong results in destroying the enemy. Vasyl Vasilyovych excels at this and will continue to do so within the SBU system. I instructed Vasyl Malyuk to make our asymmetric operations the strongest in the world. The resources and proper political support for this are available. Together we discussed candidates to select the new head of the SBU.”

A new head of the SBU has been appointed in his place — Major General Yevhen Khmara, who previously headed the special unit “Alpha.”

Additionally, Zelensky appointed former Canadian politician Chrystia Freeland as an adviser on economic development.

The resignation of Vasyl Malyuk and the appointment of Yevhen Khmara as head of the SBU indicate a shift in Ukraine's security policy. These personnel changes underscore the importance of asymmetric operations in the fight against the enemy and the readiness of the Ukrainian authorities to adapt approaches to ensure national security in the face of modern challenges.
