Hungary and Slovakia Issue Demands to Ukraine: Oil Transit for EU Loan and Electricity.
Demands from Hungary and Slovakia
According to UATV: Hungary and Slovakia have presented Ukraine with a set of demands concerning the resumption of oil shipments via the 'Druzhba' pipeline. Hungary has blocked a €90 billion EU loan package for Ukraine. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that Budapest will not approve the EU's financial assistance until the 'Druzhba' pipeline is operational again.
Separately, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico declared that Slovakia will halt emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine if oil deliveries are not restored. He specified:
«If oil supplies to Slovakia are not resumed on Monday, I will ask SEPS to stop emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine.» — Robert Fico
Negotiations and Energy Security
European Commission energy spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen confirmed that talks are ongoing between Ukraine, Hungary, and Slovakia regarding the damaged 'Druzhba' pipeline. Meanwhile, EU countries maintain oil reserves sufficient for three months, which could help cushion the impact of potential supply disruptions.
This standoff highlights Ukraine's critical energy security challenges and the complex dynamics with neighboring states that control key energy infrastructure. The situation underscores how energy dependencies are being leveraged in regional politics. Failure to resolve the conflict could heighten the risk of an energy crisis in Ukraine, affecting its economy and stability. Negotiations facilitated by the European Commission may provide a crucial avenue for finding a compromise acceptable to all parties involved.
