Power outages threaten poultry farming: prices for chicken and eggs may rise by 20%.
According to ТСН: The lack of stable energy supply may negatively affect poultry meat and egg production in Ukraine.
Consequences of unstable electricity supply
The Executive Director of the Ukrainian Poultry Farmers Union, Serhiy Karpenko, noted that problems with electricity supply could significantly impact prices for chicken and eggs. He emphasized that this sector requires stable energy supply.
"The use of alternative energy sources negatively affects the cost of eggs and poultry meat. Constant power outages pose a threat not only to the production of goods but also to the very existence of the poultry industry and the food security of the state," the expert said.
Impact of outages on production
According to Karpenko, electricity outages may lead to a decrease in livestock and an increase in production costs. He also added that poultry producers have special requirements for electricity supply, as electricity is necessary for incubation, slaughtering, processing, storage, and delivery of finished products to consumers.
The production of compound feeds is also not fully adapted to the conditions of electricity outages. The equipment of feed mills cannot operate reliably on diesel generators, which threatens the preservation of the livestock.
"Powerful equipment at feed mills requires a certain voltage for its start and operation, ensuring all related processes for producing feed according to the rations, which diesel generators simply cannot provide. The inability to produce feed poses a threat of inevitable loss of poultry livestock," the expert emphasized.
Price increase forecasts
Karpenko also noted that the use of alternative energy sources may lead to an increase in poultry production costs by 15-20%. Experts predict that in the fall, the price of eggs may rise to 100 hryvnias per dozen. Additionally, there may be an increase in prices for meat, milk, and bread, considering the risks associated with the situation near the front.
Thus, unstable energy supply poses a threat not only to chicken and egg production but could also significantly impact the food situation in Ukraine. Under conditions of high prices and risks, producers face additional challenges that complicate adaptation to new realities. All of this raises concerns about the security of food resources in the country.
