Simplified Return Process for AWOL Soldiers: Key Dates and Conditions Announced.
New Streamlined Pathway for Troops to Rejoin After Unauthorized Leave
According to Novyny.live: Starting June 12, Ukraine has introduced a simplified mechanism for military personnel who left their units without command authorization before that date to return to service. This program remains open until September 20, giving soldiers the chance to select the unit they wish to rejoin. The Operational Command 'South' announced this on June 22.
Under Article 401, paragraph 5 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, those who voluntarily return may be exempt from punishment. This is a critical point for potential returnees, as nearly 10% of soldiers in mechanized brigades have previously committed unauthorized absence. In contrast, high-tech units see only 1.5% of personnel with such a history.
Service Members' Rights and Available Support
It is important to note that soldiers with disabilities retain the right to discharge from service. For those who processed their return through the Army+ platform, confirmation comes via the 'En Route' status in Army ID. If issues arise, personnel can contact the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine hotline at 0 800 605 100.
The introduction of this simplified return mechanism aims to support troops who wish to resume their duties while reducing social tension among service members who have faced difficulties during their service.
This step could help stabilize the army's situation by allowing soldiers who left service to return without fear of punishment.
This time-limited simplified process also reflects the military command's effort to balance discipline with personnel support in challenging circumstances. Given the current situation in the country, such an initiative may help bring experienced fighters—who possess crucial skills for Ukraine's defense—back into the ranks.
